When you hear the words “mother daughter paint party photoshoot” what comes to mind? If you’re anything like me, I see lots of love, hear lots of giggles, and time spent in a breezy field in summer. There are flowers, paint brushes, jars filled with paint, and sun dappled light streaming in through a white sheet. It’s warm, and the sounds of birds break the silence between giggles, and if you’re lucky, the quiet click of a camera shutter from your favorite photographer, there to capture every paint squish, every nose boop, and every smile along the way.
I can’t tell you how much I loved this styled session with Allison and Violet, the absolute perfect pair for these photos. We had so much fun together in a small, tucked away park in Saline, Michigan, and I felt so lucky to have been a part of what I assume is a core memory for both of them.
List of props needed for a paint party photoshoot
- Sheet or large piece of white fabric – I used upholstery fabric from Joann Fabrics since it was cheaper and better quality than any of the flat sheets I was finding. Bonus, no factory creases to iron out!
- A Frame Ladder
- String or twine
- Paint (I asked Allison and Violet what their favorite colors were and brought paint that fit the aesthetic of the session)
- Paintbrushes
- Glass jars for the paint
- Flowers – Instead of buying fake flowers, I opted to take a trip to Trader Joe’s since they have great fresh flowers at a reasonable price.
- Baskets / metal buckets / vases for the flowers
- WIPES! This is a must for cleanup!
When is the best time of year for this session?
Honestly? As much as I love this in summer, I think this could work so well in any season, yes even winter. It was so much fun I’d be willing to get cold to do this again! My wheels are turning and I’m thinking of new ways to adapt this to any season (and pretty much any location), so if you want to take on the challenge, bring in your own twist, or have your whole family join, let’s plan out your session!
This session was from a model call I ran back in the summer of 2024, if you’d like to get on my email list for model calls you can sign up here!
