The Power of Documentary Style Family Photos

Bright and joyful in-home family photography session by an Ann Arbor family photographer, capturing parents with their four young children laughing and cuddling together in a sunlit living room

Why the Most Meaningful Family Photos Aren’t Always the “Perfect” Ones

Ever try to wrangle three kids into matching outfits, get them into the car, remember the snacks, and then somehow expect everyone to smile sweetly for the camera? Yeah… me too. (Let’s be real, even just finding socks in my house can be a team effort.)

But here’s the thing I tell every family I work with: it’s not about perfection. It’s about connection. And whether your toddler is sprinting off into the weeds with a granola bar or your teen is mysteriously allergic to smiling, there is still a beautiful, honest story unfolding right in front of us.

At Emmy & Ollie Photography, your new documentary family photographer in Michigan, I’m not aiming to stage your life. I’m here to help you celebrate it! Wild energy and all. Because storytelling in photography is what helps those little in-between moments shine bright years from now.

Letting Go of “Perfect” to Find Something Even Better

I hear it all the time when someone books a session: “What if my kids don’t sit still?” or “I’m so worried we won’t get a good photo.”

Let me tell you about a session that captured pure magic… and wouldn’t you know it, nothing went according to plan.

Mom and Dad showed up completely in sync, snacks packed, calm energy radiating out like some kind of peaceful parenting spell. Their kiddos? Sweet, curious, and (let’s be honest) a little overwhelmed. But because the parents trusted the process and let me set the tone with silliness and play, the day unfolded easily. We rolled with snack breaks, giggles, and even a little tears. AND we captured real, raw connection and joy.

The best part? It wasn’t the kids “behaving” or following a shot list. It was the best because we created a space where they were free to be themselves. That’s when the real magic happened (and always does).

How I Use Storytelling to Create Emotional, Real-Life Family Photos

1. I Follow the Kids’ Lead (Yep, They’re in Charge)

Seriously. My sessions are usually more of a wild backyard adventure or a cuddle fest on the living room floor than a photoshoot in the traditional sense.

  • If your kid wants to go to the playground, we’re going.
  • If they want to show off their fart noise collection (it’s a thing), I’m laughing right alongside them.
  • If they’re done halfway through, I pivot. My camera and I are very flexible.

Self-directed kids are usually the happiest, and happy kids make meaningful, authentic photos. That’s why play is the foundation of everything I do.

2. I Build Trust From the First Hello

Being photographed can feel weird, I get it. And a photographer showing up with a big camera can be super intimidating to little ones (and adults too).

That’s why I start every session with connection.

  • I chat with the kids like they’re my buddies because, honestly, they are.
  • I check in with parents and share what we’re doing and why.
  • I include everyone, even if some family members aren’t technically “in the frame” at the moment.

We’re a team for the next hour or so, and when that vibe clicks? That’s when we capture the emotions and energy that truly tell your authentic story.

3. I Embrace the Chaos With Open Arms

If you’ve ever worried that your child is “too much” for photos, please hear this: your kid is exactly who they’re meant to be, and I welcome them exactly as they are. Chaos and all!

I’ve worked as a nanny, a summer camp counselor, and I’m raising two kids of my own (who are, on most days, equal parts unicorn and hurricane). I’m used to high-energy, neurodivergent, shy, silly, unpredictable behavior. That’s not something I tolerate, it’s something I celebrate.

Let me handle the pace, the interruptions, the mood swings. You? Just love on your family and trust that the chaos is still worth remembering.

4. I Turn Everyday Moments Into Forever Memories

Getting dressed up for a photo is fine and all, but what really lights me up is documenting the parts of your family story that feel like you.

  • Reading books in your favorite chair
  • Splashing kids with water in the backyard
  • Snuggling up on the couch while everyone tells fart jokes (again, it’s a theme lately…)

Your life doesn’t have to be picture-perfect. It’s already picture-worthy.

Why It Matters: These Memories Are Worth Celebrating

There’s this idea we have to wait until life calms down or gets cleaner or somehow becomes more “presentable” before we’re worthy of being photographed. I want to gently (but firmly) call that out as the lie it is.

You don’t owe your future self a spotless living room. You owe them reminders of the soft chaos, the wild years, the laughs and tears and tiny hands holding yours. (I’m not crying, you’re crying)

Years from now, when your house is quiet and your calendar has a little less glitter and glue on it, you’ll look back at these photos and remember how beautifully full and alive this season truly was.

So let’s capture it now, while it’s still wonderfully messy.
