Ann Arbor Maternity + Newborn Photography

Maternity + Newborn Portfolio

I know from experience that being pregnant can be hard, my pregnancy with Violet (my second baby) was so tough on my body that I'm still healing from it 4 years on. But I also know that it's only a brief blip of your life and you may really regret not getting your maternity photos taken (ask me how I know this...) So while you may be on the fence about maternity photos, let me tell you it's the best gift you can give your future self and children. I want to show you how beautiful you are.
And once your baby is here, let's make sure to capture that scrunchy nose, the sweet smiles, those squishy toes and tiny fingers. We'll spend some calm, quiet time getting all the snuggles you'll love to look back on. I believe the sweet spot for newborn photos is around 4 weeks into their life because baby's little personality is starting to shine, mama has had some time to heal, and everyone is settled into a good routine. So let's get planning!

The experience of pregnancy and bringing new life into the world should be celebrated, and I'm here to do just that

"I absolutely love the maternity photos that Emily took of me. She found the PERFECT location at the Arb’s Peony Garden and she even helped with my wardrobe color choice to make sure the colors of the flowers popped. She’s very professional and also very fun to work with!"

Maternity and newborn photos should not be a bore OR a chore. My goal with every session is for everyone to have a sweet time together, be themselves, be present in the moment, and forget about the camera. I'm there to guide the session, but especially for newborns, they're the ones truly in charge.

Have Some Fun!

Photos shouldn't be a chore

I have a prep guide I send to every family with info on what to wear (or what not to wear), what activities we might get up to during the session, and tutorials on how to use my gallery software. And I'm always here to help between booking and the session!

"As someone who didn’t love being pregnant, I was really on the fence about having maternity photos done. However after a good friend had beautiful maternity photos done by Emily at Ann Arbor’s peony gardens, I knew I wouldn’t regret it. Emily suggested a hiking trail nearby that would fit my outdoorsy vibe and took the most breathtaking photos that I will cherish forever and can’t wait to show my daughter someday!"

If you are up for it, I offer a maternity + newborn package (you'll save $500 by booking both at one time), and it means you'll have one less thing to think about once baby is here since I'll handle all of the logistics!

Maternity + Newborn

Newborns are so sweet when they're tiny and squishy, but that doesn't mean you have to schedule them right when baby is born. In fact I think you should wait until they're about 4 weeks old to give you all time to adjust to the new person in your home.

Newborn

The best time for maternity photos (in my humble opinion) is right at the end of the 2nd trimester into the beginning of the 3rd. If you push too far into the pregnancy you run the risk of having a baby with you for your maternity photos!

Maternity

If you want to book photos of your pregnancy announcement, we should schedule them around 12-20 weeks depending on when you feel comfortable announcing. And don't worry, I won't share anything before you do!

Announcement

Ok but whEN should we book?

Absolutely! If you want to bring along the family I'm all for it. They're as much a part of the equation as mama and soon to be baby, but I will make sure to do some solo shots with just mom during the session.

If for ANY reason you're not feeling great, please let me know. I don't want you to push yourself for any reason, mentally or physically, because at the end of the day your health is far more important than photos. This goes for both maternity and newborn sessions. I am flexible and want everyone feeling their best.

Great question! When we chat during our initial phone call, you'll let me know your due date, and then about two weeks before then I'll start checking in with you to see how everything is progressing. Once baby is here (you're welcome to let me know or wait for one of my check in emails) we have a few weeks before the session to figure out what date works for both of us!

This is one of the reasons that my newborn sessions are 90 minutes. It gives everyone time to take breaks for diapers, feeding, cuddling, napping, whatever is needed. Most of the time we're done with photos around the one hour mark, so that extra 30 minutes acts as a gentle buffer for those fussier babes.
